Prescribed Burning

Prescribed Burning PhotoControlled burns are essential to the long-term maintenance and management of a prairie. Our prescribed burn teams consist of members who have participated in numerous prescribed burns and have completed appropriate training. They are involved in all facets of the prescribed burning project, including preparation of a burn plan, obtaining necessary permits, public notification, site preparation, pre-burn monitoring, ignition and control and mop-up. Additionally, JFNew's support staff includes seven certified wildland-firefighters with extensive experience burning in urban-interface areas where smoke management is a major concern.

FireControlled burns should be done after the second or third year following seeding when sufficient growth of fuel species is present to carry a burn. Burns should then be done every three to five years thereafter. If burning is not practical, a late fall mowing may be substituted annually the first three years, and every third year thereafter.

Established PrairieJFNew maintains the most up-to-date, efficient, and safe field gear and equipment available for burn control and management and is a recognized leader in the field of prescribed burning for ecological restoration.
